Jackson and Preston Beckham

Okay, I'm trying to be humorous in my title and then realized I am not even sure I spelled Beckham correctly! I am so sports illiterate! But, with two boys I am sure trying!

The boys are playing soccer this fall! Jackson played when he was 3 for two seasons, but it was Tots Soccer meaning that it is kind of like baby gym class on the soccer field with a soccer ball. Not really soccer. So, this is his first season playing real games and really learning the sport. Which is very exciting. I do think I personally enjoy baseball more..but we'll do that again in the spring. I always said I'd let them try everything (although I am saving football till they are older because I am definitely not about to encourage physical force at this age..we've got enough of that!) So, we'll see how it goes. I will admit I am a little nervous of how I'll handle it all. First, I don't know what night practice is yet and as always I am nervous it will fall when I have to work and then it will be hard to get him there or Paul will have to go it alone (and then I'll have to deal with hearing how hard it is. :)) Second, I am worried because they said enough coaches didn't sign up and they are having trouble finding room for everyone! :( Third, well, read the last post! He has a new medical condition that doesn't mean he can't play. In fact, when I type part two you'll read the doctors are excited we keep him in sports and if he wasn't they would ask us to put him in sports since exercise is so important. But, I have alot of work on my hands (and remember Preston is still going to be with me requiring attention as well.) For example, I have to plan meals and snacks around games and practice to keep his sugars in range. If he's too low (I have to check it just before practice and after), he can't play until I get it up with snack. Likewise, if he's too high, he cannot play. And, it's the hottest time of the year (which I learned the first session he played much to my dislike..in fact a few practices were cancelled because it was 104 degrees and deemed unsafe for the kids to play one September.) So, I have to watch him extra carefully for getting overheated and dehydrated. But...I am staying open minded...and well, he's super excited!

And..Preston is a pig in the sunshine! He is finally old enough to "play", too. He will be doing the Tots program Jackson did when he was three. Which should be interesting because Preston won't be three until January. This will be a good lesson in listening and following instructions that's for sure! Preston is ready though! He wore Jackson's old shinguards the entire day the other day. He wore them to Sonic for lunch and all through Dick's Sporting Goods when I took them shopping for their soccer "stuff."

Jackson liked the Transformer ball, but I think he remembers noone had those kind of balls last time and decided instead on a very pretty blue one. Preston also got blue.

Jackson got new shinguards. A huge mixup. I thought since he is now taller the old ones (Preston is wearing above) wouldn't fit so I gave them to Preston. Lo and behold the new ones Jackson got are the same size so really Preston should have gotten the new ones. Oh, well. You try to keep it all even, but no matter how hard you try it doesn't always work out. :)

I also let them get cones so they could have "practice" at home. I can already tell just in the time they've spent "playing soccer games" in the living room since we went shopping (yes..I realize I am on borrowed time for yet another injury or a broken housewares item) that Jackson really has gotten the idea better of kicking the ball more since two years ago when he played. He can really put some force behind that kick!

We're ready! I can't wait to see how they both do. It's a new chapter for them both. And, while I know it will be alot of hard work. You all know I wouldn't have it any other way. :)
